An OS is the software that controls the way a computer works and how you interact with it. The 'big three' operating systems are: Windows, Mac OS and Chrome OS.

So how do you know which one to choose? As each has their own strengths and weaknesses, we've rounded up the essential information you need to figure out which is best for you.

Windows

This is the most common OS you'll find on computers and laptops. Prices for a computer or a laptop that runs Windows can start at as little as £250, increasing to up to £3,000, depending on the specification and features of the model you choose. This means there's a Windows computer or laptop to suit pretty much any budget.

There are plenty of applications and programs that are compatible with Windows, from Photoshop for editing pictures to iTunes for managing music. There is an app store similar to the app store on a smartphone where you can download popular apps such as Netflix. When a new version of Windows is released, you'll usually have to pay to upgrade. The time between each version differs but as a guide, there was a 3 year gap between Windows 8 and Windows 10. This was free of charge for the first year after its launch, but after that it cost £100 to upgrade.

One drawback to choosing a computer that runs Windows is that new Windows computers and laptops often come with a range of pre-loaded apps that you may not need - from games to social networks - so check this before you buy.

Mac OS

Mac OS can only be found on computers and laptops from one manufacturer: Apple. Unfortunately, Apple devices are expensive, with prices starting at around £949. Much like Windows, Mac OS is compatible with a wide range of software but also features its own app store to download Apple apps such as Final Cut Pro for editing videos.

Mac OS works well with iPhones and iPads, which means you can keep track of your iMessages and even phone calls across different devices. Mac OS updates are all free and often add significant changes, such as support for Siri (Apple's voice-activated virtual assistant) and editing tools for the Photos app.

Best if: You want an operating system with free updates that works well with creative programs

Chrome OS

Chrome OS hasn't been around for as long as Windows or Mac OS. It looks a lot like Windows and, as it is used by many manufacturers, there is a wide range of Chrome OS computers and laptops to choose from. The best bit? These are often more budget-friendly. This is because Chrome OS computers and laptops have a very small amount of storage space, relying on photos, video and files being stored in a secure area online instead of on the device itself. The downside to this is that if you don't have internet access, there isn't much you can do with a Chrome OS device.

However, updates to the OS are always free and the best part is that they happen in the background automatically without you ever knowing or having to do a thing. You also get access to the Google Play Store, which allows you to download your favourite mobile apps such as YouTube.

Best if: You're looking for a low-cost laptop, and have constant internet access
